OPACT® SMCC 50 is a high-performance co-processed pharmaceutical excipient manufactured by spray-drying 98% microcrystalline cellulose with 2% colloidal silicon dioxide in aqueous medium. With a median particle size of 65 μm, SMCC 50 provides a large specific surface area—5 to 6 times higher than standard MCC—which significantly improves powder flow, compactibility, drug loading capacity and tablet disintegration. It is an ideal filler and diluent for direct compression and dry granulation processes, particularly in high-dose tablet formulations.

Product Application

 

OPACT® SMCC 50 is primarily used as a filler, diluent and binder in oral solid dosage forms produced by direct compression and dry granulation. Its outstanding compressibility and good flow properties make it especially suitable for high-dose tablet formulations where poor-flow APIs challenge tableting efficiency and tablet hardness. In low-dose tablets, the large specific surface area of SMCC 50 ensures superior mixing homogeneity and content uniformity while allowing smaller tablet sizes for easier swallowing. It is also widely applied in orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) to shorten disintegration time and improve mouthfeel, in tablet cores and pellet cores where approximately 20% SMCC 50 addition enhances tensile strength, and in formulations containing traditional Chinese medicine extracts or moisture-sensitive APIs where its low hygroscopicity prevents sticking and capping.
